The high specialization in indoor volleyball regarding the different playing positions could lead to the repeated use of harmful movements like arm swing techniques due to specific movement conditions e.g., for fast ball players. Athletes with chronic shoulder pain present symptoms of impingement as a result from different shoulder conditions like rotator cuff tendinopathy, shoulder instability, scapular dyskinesis, biceps pathology, SLAP (superior labrum anterior-superior) lesions, and GIRD (glenohumeral internal rotation deficit) (Cools and Reeser, 2017). This is of great importance since shoulder injuries in indoor volleyball, like other overhead sports, are very common (16-19% of all overuse injuries, Seminati and Minetti, 2013) due to the high amount of more than 40000 attacks/year (Kugler et al., 1996). Based on their experimental findings of unfavorable range of motion and trajectories of the humerus in traditional techniques, they hypothesized that alternative techniques might be less harmful for the shoulder joint. ( 2015) analyzed the kinematics of different arm swing techniques. Already in 1986 Selinger and Ackerman-Blount described five different types of arm swing techniques during the spike attack, however, until recently, little scientific attention has been given to these techniques. While there is little inter-individual variety in the acceleration and follow through phases (Coleman et al., 1993 Oka et al., 1976 Selinger and Ackermann-Blount, 1986), there are different techniques applied during the wind-up and cocking phase (Seminati et al., 2015). ![]() Following the take-off, the spike technique is subdivided into the wind-up, the cocking phase, the acceleration phase, and the follow through phase. Therefore, much emphasis is put on the development of the overarm movement. One of the most important technical parts of the game is the spike attack, which was identified as a major performance indicator (Drikos and Vagenas, 2011). The development of the game has led to anthropometric differences between attacking players (middle blockers, outside hitters, and opposites) compared to non-attacking players (setters and liberos) in females and males (Gualdi-Russo and Zaccagni, 2001 Palao et al., 2014). Such changes have affected the game tactics and player’s specialization, e.g., depending on the playing position. Indoor volleyball was introduced in the Olympic Games in 1964 and has experienced several significant rule changes like the change of the scoring system from the side-out system to the rally-system and the introduction of the libero, a specialized player for defense who is not allowed to attack. Based on these results we suggest to critically revise arm swing technique training especially for young players and players with shoulder problems. Reasons for that could be the implicit knowledge of players (and coaches) regarding increased performance (ball speed) and injury prevention. Although most volleyball textbooks only describe the Bow-and-arrow techniques, most of the world class indoor volleyball players used Circular and Snap arm swing techniques. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in arm swing techniques between sexes, playing positions, and scoring system but significant differences (p < 0.001) to beach volleyball. Bow-and-arrow high and Straight techniques were significantly less used than other techniques in both sexes. ![]() Five different arm swing techniques in the cocking phase (Straight, Bow-and-arrow high, Bow-and-arrow low, Snap, Circular) were classified by two experts. Eighty-two male (M) and 85 female (F) players were assessed from video recordings from ten competitions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the spike attack arm swing techniques of Olympic volleyball winners and finalists (1984-2021) and to investigate possible differences between sex, playing position, scoring system, and compared to beach volleyball. While a variety of arm swing techniques was already shown in world class beach volleyball players, it is unclear if this is also true for world class indoor volleyball. Different spike attack arm swing techniques have developed which might affect performance and risk of injury. In the last decades, indoor volleyball has experienced significant rule changes and a high player specialization in both sexes. However, if you look closer, you’ll see slight striping that’s kind of blurred out so it doesn’t look as distinct as the other grey tabby cat colors or patterns. It might not look like the cat is part of the tabby family but it is due to the markings on the face. Usually, ticked tabbies are known as the Abyssinian due to the excess hair. The grey ticked tabby doesn’t have any pattern on it so it looks more like a wolf. That’s also part of the reason why cat experts theorize that spotted tabbies might have originated from the mackerel tabby. In some cases, the arms and legs may also have broken lines similar to that of the mackerel tabby. These spots may take different shapes, such as rosettes or ovals, depending on the genetics of the cat. The spots can be easily spotted (pun intended) on the sides of the cat. However, the spots are a bit subtler, especially since it is a grey tabby cat. This gray tabby cat pattern will resemble a cheetah or any spotted jungle cat out there. Mackerel tabbies are more common in Asian countries, especially in mixed breeds. ![]() The reason why they are called mackerel tabbies is that the pattern resembles that of a fish skeleton as one stripe forms smaller stripes from the spine. The lines on their body have equal amounts of spacing. In some cases, they are also called “tiger tabbies” due to their resemblance to tigers. Unlike the classic type, they are mostly straight and not swirling at all. It is characterized by much narrower and finer stripes in a vertical pattern. This is perhaps the most common pattern found in both moggies and puspins as mentioned above. Sometimes, their blotched patterns may look like a bulls-eye target or even that of a zebra due to the vividness of the coat pattern. In most areas of the world, the gray classic tabby cat is also known as the “blotched tabby”. That’s because you’ll find distinctive swirls on the sides of the cat that are completely separate and easy to spot from the cat’s lighter color (e.g. This tabby cat coloring will give you the impression of a marble cake. So who did our founding Fathers view as our Creator when they wrote the Declaration of Independence? Basically, all the names above could be relevant with the exception of the name Jesus (in English), Yeshua (in Aramaic), or Ihous (in Greek). The prophet, Moses, who actually experienced the voice and character of God while on Mount Sinai also was given the name I AM WHO I AM…as the name of this God that we call Creator. When it comes to ‘names’ for the Creator we generally think of these when we think in English: Jehovah or the God of Israel, Allah (the Arabic name for the God of Abraham…used by most Moslems), Jesus or Christ (used by many Evangelical Christians who declared Yeshua equal with the God of Israel), or Yahweh (the unpronounceable name which really has no vowels…YHWH), and Father God (for many non-Evangelical Christians who prefer this name for the God of Israel). What are some common ‘names’ for this Creator? Plato and some Greek philosophers view the Demiurge as the ultimate Creator. Many native Americans and similar groups view The Great Spirit as Creator of all. Many Chinese view Pangu as the Creator. Many from India view Vishnu as the ultimate God/Creator. This God is viewed as our Creator by most Jews, Moslems, and non-Evangelical Christians. The God of Israel goes all the way back to Creation (some 6000 years of history). Going back into history there are many and various Gods that people have viewed as important. ![]() First of all let’s review the various perspectives of the major historical philosophies about God or the concept of Creator. What did he mean when he said: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.Īfter reading much of Thomas Jefferson’s philosophy and theology I can discern some of his thinking with reference to this concept that we call Creator. First of all, Thomas Jefferson wrote the main body of our Declaration of Independence and his thoughts and perceptions should be understood. Is our Creator a real source of power, intelligence, awareness, consciousness, and meaning…or is this concept just a meaningless idea of some delusional American founders? Let’s focus first on who our founders viewed as our Creator…as well as who they did not view as Creator. Let’s give some thought to the concept of our Creator and see if we can discern who this person is…and what attributes this divine person maintains.
